Executive Director and Restoration Ecologist
Nachusa Grasslands is a nature preserve made up of restored and remnant prairie located about two hours west of Chicago. TNC purchased the core of the preserve in 1986, recognizing that Nachusa offered the best opportunity in the state to restore a large and diverse grassland. So far, more than 4,000 acres have been protected at Nachusa Grasslands through acquisition or conservation easements.
Friends of Nachusa Grasslands — Executive Director
This position will be the first employee hire for this organization. Friends of Nachusa Grasslands is a nonprofit organization founded in 2008 by volunteers dedicated to providing for the long-term care and management of The Nature Conservancy owned-and-operated Nachusa Grasslands, 4,000 acres of protected grassland and prairie, located west of Chicago, northeast of Dixon, Illinois. The preserve is home to 700 native plant species and 180 species of birds, including grasshopper sparrows, dickcissels and Henslow’s sparrows, and nearly 100 bison roam 1,500 acres. The Nature Conservancy — Restoration Ecologist
The Restoration Ecologist develops, manages, and advances conservation programs, plans, and methods for small to medium scale geographic areas. The Ecologist addresses critical threats to natural systems and individual species, fosters cross-site learning among conservation community, and supplies conservation planning teams with site or landscape level information relevant to the planning process. Additional tasks include activities associated with bison management, interfacing with scientific research, along with maintaining and setting up for events for visitors and members, repairing and towing equipment, and mentoring others in various tasks. Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development and fundraising targets. This position is onsite at Nachusa Grasslands near Dixon, IL and this position will close once a strong applicant pool is identified.
